A Journey Through The Vel Vel Festival

On a sunny day in Bandel, a historical town in West Bengal, India, excitement fills the air as the Vel Vel Festival approaches. This event is profoundly important for the Tamil community and resonates deeply with me and all those who partake in its rituals. It presents an opportunity to explore and witness moments of profound significance, transcending the ordinary, and immerse oneself in the power of faith and dedication.

As I journey south from the Bandel station, I traverse a quaint road that leads me to the heart of the Madrasi community. Here, history and tradition blend seamlessly, painting a vivid tapestry of vibrant colours and fervent prayers. Amidst the lively streets and ancient temples, I find myself engulfed in a world steeped in legend and folklore.

Rooted in ancient times, the Vel Vel Festival intertwines tales of bravery and divine intervention with modern-day celebration. It serves as a testament to courage and sacrifice, embodied in the rituals of devotees who adorn themselves with spears, lemons and metal hooks, symbolizing their unwavering devotion to the Lord.

Capturing the procession of devotees, each step resonates with purpose and resolve. The air pulsates with the rhythmic beats of drums and chants, echoing the fervent prayers of believers. Amidst the bustling crowds, there exists a sense of unity and togetherness as devotees gather to seek blessings and share in the camaraderie of the festival.

Beyond the grandeur and spectacle, lies a profound truth—a truth that transcends religion and tradition. It speaks to the innate human desire to connect with something greater, to find solace and significance amidst life's chaos.

For me, the Vel Vel Festival transcends mere photography; it's a journey of self-discovery. It offers a glimpse into the strength and faith of the human spirit, reminding us of the enduring hope and belief in something larger than ourselves. Reflecting on my experiences, documenting the Vel Vel Festival has deepened my connection to my culture and fostered a renewed appreciation for our world's diversity.

Ultimately, it's not just about capturing moments or preserving memories; it's about sharing narratives and connecting with individuals whose paths intersect in remarkable and unexpected ways. Through storytelling, my aim is to infuse humanity into the event and inspire others to embark on their own quests for enlightenment and adventure, uncovering beauty and significance in the most unlikely of places.

Through the lens of my camera, amidst the chaos and devotion of my hometown's festival, I uncover the essence of India's unique spirit and traditions, experiences found nowhere else in the world.

A testament to three years of unwavering dedication, these documented moments below encapsulate the evolving essence of the Vel Vel Festival portrayed through the lens of dedication and passion.

"In the tapestry of life, faith is the thread that binds human existence, moving us forward and driving us towards greater purpose. In the midst of devotion and dedication, the spirit of faith illuminates every step of our journey."

In the quiet moments of reflection, I realize how deeply I've been touched by the essence of this festival, its rituals, and the unwavering faith of its devotees.

The festival takes place in cities such as Kathirakamam and Colombo. The Madrasi/Tamil community of Bandel (West Bengal) observed the Vel festival in April month, which is a completely different time. They observed this festival to worship God Sitala

I am Ananya Bose Majumder. By profession, I serve the people of West Bengal as a pharmacist under the state government. However, my true calling lies in the art of photography, a passion that has fueled my soul since a young age.

I embarked on my photographic journey early on, initially capturing moments during family travels. However, it wasn't until 2018, after receiving my first salary, that I took a decisive step forward by gifting myself a DSLR camera. From that moment on, my relationship with photography shifted from a hobby to a serious pursuit.

In my daily interactions as a pharmacist, I find joy in observing, connecting with people, and documenting their experiences. This innate curiosity about human nature has not only enriched my professional life but has also become a source of inspiration for my photography. I adeptly capture the essence of human emotions and fleeting moments, turning them into timeless treasures.

I dedicate myself to honing my craft. I immerse myself in the works of eminent photographers, continuously seeking to learn and refine my skills. As a self-taught photographer, I view my journey as endless, a perpetual quest for mastery and self-expression through the lens.

For me, photography is more than just a hobby; it is my soul's purpose in this Universe, a medium through which I connect with the world and leave my indelible mark.
