Transparent

On the peripheries of urban environments, at the margins of societal acknowledgement, there exists a demographic often referred to as the "transparent people." This group encompasses individuals such as beggars, substance abusers, sex workers, and others who have become estranged from conventional societal norms. Over several years, I documented their lives extensively, observing them during both day and night and on various occasions.

Initially, I collaborated with a group of women who regularly visited the vicinity of the old central bus station in Tel Aviv, an area characterised by a significant homeless population. These women provided essential supplies, including food, clothing, blankets, cosmetics, and other necessities. Notably, one of the residents of the area faced the challenge of living with an amputated leg. Upon our arrival one day, we discovered that her prosthetic limb had been stolen. Through the efforts of compassionate volunteers, we helped her obtain a new prosthesis. The joy reflected on her face during its initial fitting was a testament to the worthiness of our endeavours.

As time progressed, I expanded my visits to include the morning hours, which facilitated deeper engagement through conversation and personal storytelling. I discovered that one individual found pleasure in completing crossword puzzles; therefore, I made a point of bringing her a crossword puzzle book and a pen on each visit. Another person who experienced difficulties due to ill-fitting shoes received appropriate footwear from us. Additionally, during holiday evenings, we provided festive meals; however, the most profound need expressed by these individuals was the desire for human connection— to be acknowledged and embraced.

We also accompanied one man to rehabilitation centres on multiple occasions. However, he remained for varying durations; he ultimately returned to his former environment, as he perceived it as his only available option. This cycle continued until a day arrived when he did not return—a heartbreaking chronicle of a death foretold.

Human society can be cruel, often exhibiting a pronounced lack of compassion and empathy, leading many individuals to retreat into their own social circles, whether out of indifference or fear. But it's essential to remember that those on the edges are just as emotional and human as anyone else—shaped by their life's challenges and experiences. By opening our eyes and hearts to them with genuine compassion, I truly believe society can become a kinder, more caring place for everyone.
