Famous slogan which once promised a heroic defense of the homeland even at the cost of the ultimate sacrifice has lost all its romantic allure for ordinary people. Today, amidst ruined cities and empty shops Cubans perceive it as a terrifying ultimatum from a regime that instead of a dignified life, offers them only a silent struggle in poverty or the fear of punishment for desiring freedom. Despite the fear of repressions and long lasting extreme lack of everything the desire for freedom still resists below the surface. This quiet force in the hearts of Cubans continues to survive waiting for the day when this beautiful country will throw off the shackles of unfreedom and awaken its enormous potential to finally bring freedom and normal life without daily struggle.
Behind these cinematic shots and fading aesthetics lies a harsh reality of daily survival, where the minimum wage is barely enough for basic food and even the simplest necessities like soap or toothpaste are out of reach for many. If you decide to travel to Cuba, please pack an extra bag filled with over-the-counter medicines, hygiene products or school supplies to give directly to the locals. When someone on the street asks you for help or medicine, remember that it is often not just begging but a sign of genuine desperation and a total lack of other options. You can also help from afar, I have personally visited Cayo Mambi charity place run by the Slovak Catholic Charity and I can confirm it is led by wonderful people who ensure your direct support goes straight to the most vulnerable Cuban children.
